What is Dandruff?

The term dandruff has also been termed as Pityriasis capitis, which is the result of excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. There are various kinds of causes of dandruff and these include frequent exposure to extreme heat and cold. In such conditions it is very normal for skin cells to die and flake off. They leave behind a small amount of flaking, which is normal and in fact quite common and thus most people suffer from dandruff at some stage of their lives. However there are certain people who suffer from this chronically and experience an unusually large amount of flaking. Dandruff comes in two forms, which includes greasy and dry forms, depending on the condition of the scalp.

Symptoms of Dandruff:
Most common symptoms of dandruff include constant itching in the scalp along with flaky growth in the scalp. It should be remembered that due to dandruff you can suffer from acne and pimples also, if this dandruff falls on your face. Mostly the dry forms of dandruff appear silvery and white while greasy flakes appear pale yellowish. Usually the greasy dandruff also has an unpleasant smell.

What causes Dandruff?
There area many factors such as stress or a bad diet, which cause dandruff. Usually the dry scalp occurs because of a deficiency in protein in the diet. But the greasy dandruff on the scalp occurs due to over production of sebum or oil producing flaking. Most people develop dry dandruff in cold weather and greasy dandruff in the warm and humid weather. It has been seen that the scalp is often like the crust of the bread, which has outer layers of skin breaking off like the crumbs. Hence dandruff is the condition caused due to undernourishment of the skin.

Treatments for Dandruff:
It has been seen that in most causes using a shampoo with the combination of ingredients to control dandruff can help in treating this problem. Mainly salicylic acid and coal-tar help to remove dead skin cells from the scalp and they reduce the rate at which these cells are created. Chemicals like Zinc pyrithione kills pityrospora and even Selenium sulfide, helps in achieving dandruff free hair. Also in some cases, keeping the scalp clean and eating a healthy and balanced diet helps to remove dandruff and with normal shampooing, such people can get rid of these flakes
