What are Genital Warts?

The term Genital warts, Condyloma, Condylomata acuminata, or venereal warts are used to define a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection. This is normally caused by some sub-types of human papillomavirus or HPV and they are spread through direct skin contact during oral, genital, or anal sex, if the partner is affected. The Genital warts are the most easily recognized symptoms of genital HPV infection.

Occurrence of the Genital Warts:
This ailment usually occurs in clusters and range from tiny particles or can spread into large masses, in the genital area. For women this ailment can occur on the outside and inside of the vagina or even at cervix, womb or around the anus. Even though genital warts are present in men and women both, the symptoms of the same are less obvious in women. In men their symptoms are usually are seen on the tip of the penis and can also be found on the shaft of the penis along with scrotum and anus. Even though it is rare, genital warts can develop in the mouth or throat of a person in case of having oral sex with the infected person.

Causes of Genital Wart:
The spread of genital wart occurs due to viral particles being able to penetrate the skin and mucosal surfaces. This is done through microscopic abrasions in the genital area and happens during sexual activity. When the cells are invaded by HPV, there are chances of a latency period, ranging from some months to years. Thus genital warts can lead to HPV, which can last for several years without a symptom. The human papillomavirus or HPV are cause genital warts and there are over 100 types of HPV, which have been identified. Almost 40 of these identified types have the potential to infect the genital area. Some of these HPV’s are low risk but many of them are high risk ones and can lead to cancer and other fatal diseases.

Symptoms of Genital Warts:
The symptoms of genital warts are bothersome because of their location and also due to their size and the itching caused. Sizes of these ailments usually range from less than one millimeter across to several square centimeters, depending on the numbers of warts joining. The people suffering from the same also complain of painless bumps, itching, and discharge, which can be accompanied by rare bleeding or urinary obstruction.

There are no cures for HPV but there are cures for genital warts, and often this ailment may disappear without treatment. In some cases this ailment can eventually develop a fleshy and small raised growth but understanding their growth or recovery is often impossible.
