What is Indigestion?
The improper functioning of digestive system causes indigestion or stomach upset, which results in chest burns followed by an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Indigestion can also be accompanied by nausea, tendency of vomiting, heaviness in the abdomen and discomfort. Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia and is associated with the burning or pain in the upper abdomen.

The symptoms of Indigestion:
There are a lot of people who suffer from indigestion and they also experience the symptoms like fullness during a meal and are unable to finish the meal. The person feels that the food is staying too long in the stomach and this can be accompanied by a feeling of fullness before a meal. The pain in the epigastric area, which is between the lower end of the chest bone and the navel, is also a symptom of indigestion. Apart from this the person may experience epigastric pain ranging from mild to severe and burning in these areas too. The other symptoms of indigestion are nausea and bloating along with an unpleasant tightness in the stomach.


Causes of Indigestion:
There are various causes for indigestion and these included conditions in the digestive tract like gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD, cancer, peptic ulcer disease, and abnormality of the pancreas or bile ducts. It has been seen that if these conditions are treated then the symptoms of indigestion also improve. There are often times when there is no cause for indigestion found and this kind of indigestion is called functional dyspepsia, which occurs in the area where the stomach meets the small intestine. Often indigestion has been associated with abnormal motility or the squeezing of the stomach muscle as it receives, digests and precedes food into the small intestine. Often the causes of indigestion have been associated with the symptoms of heartburn but these are two different conditions that have different treatments.

There are various psychological causes of indigestion too and stress or worries have been diagnosed as the main causes for indigestion. Also the consumption of excess allopathic medicines causes indigestion and there are temporary traces of indigestion during pregnancy also. It has been seen that excess smoking habit also leads to indigestion along with the consumption of caffeine on empty stomach. Alcohol has been considered as one of the major causes of indigestion along with diseases like ulcer.

Indigestion can be prevented through regularly exercise as it keeps your body in shape. You should also drink lots of water and have green and fibrous vegetables. You should try and get rid of smoking and alcohol habit and relax yourself by doing meditation and yoga. You should eat small and low fat meals and chew food slowly.
