How does Premature Graying of Hair Occur?
One of the most common signs of ageing is the graying of hair, which is genetically determined. It has been seen that graying of hair occurs due to a gradual reduction in production of melanin in hair bulb. In most cases, the first of gray hairs appear near temples and eventually this would spread to crown and then to back of the head. At this time the hair has a tendency to lose its natural color, and this is mainly due to advancing age and turns grey. However there are some people who experience premature graying, which are a morbid condition and in these cases, even the young look older. Remember that the hair is an appendage of the skin and this is composed of similar cells, which are found in the outer layer of the skin known as epidermis. The hair grows from hair follicles that have been deeply recessed in the epidermis. It gets it nutrition from the sebaceous glands of the scalp, which secrete an oily substance called sebum. This also adds luster and blackness to the hair and since hair cannot be fed externally for this kind of nourishment, this requirement should be fulfilled form the bloodstream.

Causes of Graying of Hair
One of the major causes of graying of hair is inadequate nutrition, which is mainly due to the deficiencies of vitamin B, iron, copper and iodine. There are various other factors that cause the graying of hair and these include hereditary factors, stress, unhealthy scalp care and unhygienic maintained scalp, use of harsh shampoos and styling methods, blow drying and other similar reasons. According to ayurveda the premature graying of hair is caused due to emotional disturbances, anger and excess physical exertion. It has also been seen that very frequent hair coloring and other treatments like hair straightening or perms, can also cause the hair to become gray before time.

Treatments for Graying of Hair
Natural and Ayurvedic:
According to ayurveda the oils of neela, bringaraja and vibhitaki, should be massaged on scalp for preventing premature graying. Apart from this about10 milligram of pantothenic acid, 100 gram of para-aminobenzoic acid and 2000 milligram of inositol can be included in the diet to balance nutritional needs. Also healthy foods like wheat germ, yogurt, iron and iodine present rich food like seafood, carrots and bananas, etc. should be consumed. It has been proven that the Indian gooseberry is a valuable hair tonic for premature graying. This can be dried and boiled in coconut oil till they are charred and then applied on the hair.

Home Remedies:
Homemade treatments like butter from the cow’s milk can be rubbed into the roots of the hair. The natural paste of henna leaves boiled in coconut oil can be applied as a hair dye or even henna can be applied on the hair.
