SINUSITIS

What is Sinusitis or Sinus?
Basically the term sinusitis has been associated with the feeling of lousiness and a heavy head, which persists through out the day and wants the person suffering from the same to sleep all the time. Sinus also results in coughing and sneezing and feeling of lethargy. The term sinus has been associated with the hollow air spaces in the human body. The term, having a sinus attack has been referred to one or more of four pairs of sinuses, which are also known as Para nasal sinuses.

Different Types of Sinuses:
There are different kinds of sinuses which exist and hence they also affect different areas of the body. Basically these cavities are located within the skull or bones of the head, which surround the nose. These sinus areas include the frontal sinuses over the eyes in the brow area. Then there are the maxillary sinuses, which occur inside each cheekbone. The Ethmoid sinusitis occurs right behind the bridge of the nose and between the eyes and the sphenoid sinusitis occurs behind the ethmoids in the upper region of the nose and also behind the eyes.

Causes of Sinusitis:
It has been seen that every sinusitis has an opening into the nose, which allows free exchange of air and mucus, and also joins the nasal passages through a continuous mucous membrane lining. Therefore, anything that causes or leads to swelling in the nose can trigger of sinus problems and these include infections, allergic reactions and immune reactions also. The air trapped within a blocked sinus may also result in pus or other secretions and this leads to a pressure on the sinus wall. Hence this causes a sinus attack and if air is prevented from entering a para-nasal sinus, through the swollen membrane, then a vacuum can be created that causes pain.

What are the Symptoms of Sinus?
The most common symptom of the sinusitis is headache when you wake up in the morning. In most cases there is pain in the forehead over the frontal sinuses along with heaviness while bending the head. Often infections in the maxillary sinuses can lead to upper jaw and teeth to ache along with tenderness of the cheek. The ethmoid sinuses are near the tear ducts and inflammation of these cavities leads to swelling of the eyelids and tissues around the eyes. The sphenoid sinuses are less frequent and they cause earaches, neck pain, and headaches. There are various other symptoms, which are associated with sinusitis and these include fever, weakness, tiredness, coughing and even a running nose
.
